Per- & Polyflouroalkyl Substances (PFAS)

Per- and Polyflouroalkyl substances refers to a group of more than 3,000 man-made chemicals created and manufactured in the United States. These chemicals are most commonly found in fire-fighting foam, non-stick products, food packaging, water-repellant products, and cleaning agents, among other products. PFAS are also referred to as "Forever Chemicals" because of the difficulty of breaking them down and disposing of them. These chemicals can be removed using advanced treatment equipment such as reverse osmosis (RO), granular activated carbon (GAC) or ion exchange (IX) technologies. It should also be noted that water and wastewater utilities do not produce these chemicals, and as such, the industry has called for the liability of this contamination to fall at the feet of the original polluter.
