Missouri awards $12.6M for Springfield and Fulton wastewater upgrades

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources allocates $12.57 million to Springfield and Fulton for wastewater infrastructure enhancements.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has awarded a combined $12.57 million in financial assistance to Springfield and Fulton for wastewater infrastructure improvements aimed at reducing sewer overflows, improving treatment performance and extending system life.

Springfield will receive $6.77 million through the department’s Clean Water State Revolving Fund, including a $3.35 million loan and a $3.4 million grant. The project will increase wastewater collection system capacity during peak flow events to help reduce sewer overflows. The city expects to complete the upgrades by May 2028. The department estimates the financing will save ratepayers $3.4 million in principal and approximately $1.6 million in interest over the loan’s 20-year term.

Fulton will receive $5.8 million through the same program, consisting of a $4.3 million loan and a $1.5 million grant. The city will contribute an additional $1.5 million in local funds. The upgrades are designed to increase treatment capacity and improve nutrient removal while extending the facility’s service life and efficiency. Completion is expected by September 2027. The department estimates the financing will save ratepayers $1.5 million in principal and approximately $1.8 million in interest over the loan’s 20-year term.

The Clean Water State Revolving Fund supports wastewater treatment improvements, sewer collection system rehabilitation and extensions, and combined sewer overflow corrections. The program offers below-market interest rates and project management assistance to participating communities. Both projects will be funded wholly or in part with money received from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
