Desalination equipment and desalination machines are used to separate salt from water to reduce the salinity of the discharge water. Desalination is used in water reuse applications at facilities that create high salinity water — often referred to as brine — as a byproduct of other processes. A growing use and one that is likely to become common as water resources become more scarce is for drinking water treatment. Desalination equipment and desalination machines will be used during the treatment process of brine — often from water intake in the ocean — to remove the salts not only for taste and human consumption, but also to ensure the longevity of filters throughout the rest of the treatment process. This treated brine with lower salinity will then pass through advanced water treatment processes to prepare it for final stages to become drinking water.
