EPA awards $1M for Fort Pierce wastewater conveyance upgrades

The EPA awarded $1 million for pipeline work supporting Fort Pierce’s wastewater relocation and efforts to reduce contamination risks to the Indian River Lagoon.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded $1 million in Community Project Funding for wastewater infrastructure improvements supporting the relocation of Fort Pierce Utilities Authority’s wastewater treatment operations to a new Water Reclamation & Reuse Facility in Florida.

The funding will support installation of 900 feet of 24-inch pipeline and associated equipment connecting Lift Station F to an existing pipeline along Glenview Avenue. The project is part of efforts to redirect wastewater flows from South Hutchinson Island to the new mainland facility and reduce the risk of contamination to the Indian River Lagoon.

FPUA broke ground on the Water Reclamation & Reuse Facility in 2023 and completed construction in 2025. Phase 2 of the relocation project is underway and includes 17 additional conveyance projects to redirect wastewater flows to the new facility.

FPUA officials said the funding will help advance the conveyance infrastructure needed to provide reliable wastewater service while reducing the financial burden on customers. The relocation is intended to protect the estuary and improve wastewater system efficiency.
