Missouri American Water has acquired the City of Neosho’s water and wastewater systems for $34.5 million, adding approximately 5,400 water customers and 5,400 wastewater customers to the utility’s customer base.

The company plans to invest approximately $35 million in the Neosho systems over the next five years. Planned improvements include modernization of water and wastewater facilities, replacement of aging mains and installation of smart technologies to support leak detection and regulatory compliance.

Wastewater-related improvements will include replacement of the Buffalo Creek lift station. The broader infrastructure program also calls for the replacement of lead and galvanized steel service lines.

The Neosho acquisition is part of American Water Works’ continued growth through regulated utility acquisitions. The company reported adding approximately 52,000 customer connections through acquisitions during the first half of 2026, including roughly 47,000 connections from its acquisition of Nexus systems across eight states.

American Water Works is also pursuing its proposed merger with Essential Utilities, which remains targeted for completion in the first quarter of 2027. The combined company would operate regulated water and wastewater systems across 17 states.
