Veolia to provide wastewater treatment for Arauco pulp mill in Brazil
Arauco has selected Veolia to design and implement an industrial effluent treatment plant for its Sucuriú Project, a new pulp mill in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.
The facility will process 10,600 cubic meters per hour of industrial effluent and will be part of what Arauco describes as the world’s largest industrial facility built in a single phase. The treatment system will use Veolia’s biofilm activated sludge (BAS) process, which combines moving bed bioreactor (MBBR) technology with activated sludge treatment to increase biological treatment capacity within a compact footprint.
The system also will include belt presses for sludge dewatering, with the goal of optimizing sludge production and final disposal. Veolia said the treatment solution is designed to help protect local water resources and support environmental compliance.
The contract draws on Veolia’s experience in the pulp and paper industry, where it has more than 50 years of experience developing water treatment technologies.
