Pennsylvania Water Receives Nine Awards

Oct. 20, 2006

Pennsylvania American Water Co. recently received nine national awards. One of the awards went to the White Deer Plant for maintaining the Partnership for Safe Water’s Directors Award requirement for five years in a row.

The partnership is a national volunteer initiative developed by the EPA, the American Water Works Association and other organizations representing water supplies.

Dan Hufton, director of American Water Co.’s Southeast region, told The Daily Item that the company surpasses federal and state regulations by 70%.

The Director’s Award is presented to water systems that have successfully completed a detailed review process in the partnership’s self-assessment and peer review phase. At this point, the facility must identify areas of possible improvements in terms of plant design, operation and management. The facility must then create an improvement plan.

To receive the five-year award, utilities must carry out the improvements outlined and deliver water that surpasses regulations for five years.

Pennsylvania American Water signed a partnership agreement with the EPA and the state Department of Environmental Protection in February 2006.

The partnership includes more than 200 water utilities nationwide.
