Sanitary Sewer Overflow in Alabama

A sewer overflow in Alabama is a result of a grease blockage caused by a third party

In Mobile, Ala., the Mobile Area Water & Sewer System (MAWSS) responded to a sanitary sewer overflow on Nov. 20 near 720 Schillinger Road South, Suite 2. According to NBC 15, the estimated amount of wastewater that overflowed into Second Creek is unknown. The overflow is a result of a grease blockage caused by a third party and is ongoing at this time.

According to NBC 15, these grease blockages occur when foods containing fats, oil or grease are put down the drain. MAWSS currently provides those in the area free containers for grease recycling.

Dr. Bernard H. Eichold II, health officer for Mobile County, is advising residents to take precautions when coming into contact with standing water that may have accumulated as a result of the sewer overflows, according to NBC 15.  According to Eichold, those who come into direct contact with any untreated sewage are advised to wash their hands and clothing thoroughly.

Residents in the area should take precautions when using Second Creek for recreational purposes, according to NBC 15. Seafood harvested in the area should be thoroughly cooked before eating, and people should wash their cleaning seafood and before prepared the food.

According to NBC 15, MAWSS pulled a large grease blockage from the sewers earlier this month. On Twitter, they continue to warn people not to pour grease down their drains.
