Manufacturer, EPA to Launch Safer Cleaners

Dec. 28, 2000

An Arizona manufacturer will carry out the testing and production of environmentally less harmful detergents and cleaners with support from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Gemtek Products of Phoenix, Ariz., signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the EPA to promote the manufacture of a laundry detergent and multipurpose cleaner that do not contain strong solvents, bleaches, builders or compounds that deplete the oxygen of surface waters. The products, SC-Laundry and SC-1000, will be specially formulated with compounds that will quickly biodegrade into nonpolluting byproducts.

The voluntary agreement was established under EPA's Design for the Environment (DfE) program. It engages industry sectors, including industrial and institutional laundry, automotive refinishing, garment care, electronics and printing.
