Trojan Technologies Partnership With TPC Help Improve UV-Based Water Disinfection Systems

Dec. 17, 2001

Pat O'Brien, Member of Parliament for London-Fanshawe, on behalf of the Honourable Brian Tobin, Ministry of Industry announced a $3.3M repayable Technology Partnerships Canada (TPC) investment with Trojan Technologies Inc.

The investment will help the company undertake pre-competitive research and development aimed at improving the energy efficiency of ultraviolet-based water disinfection systems, making them more attractive for municipal water treatment. Trojan expects the project to create or maintain 146 jobs.

"This project holds great promise for developing technologies that will bring health and safety benefits with improvements to our water treatment systems," said O'Brien. "It clearly shows how the government of Canada–through TPC–is working to improve the quality of life for Canadians."

"We are delighted to receive the support and validation of Technology Partnerships Canada," said Allan Bulckaert, president and chief executive officer of Trojan Technologies. "In recent years there have been outbreaks of illness across Canada caused by water-borne viruses, bacteria such as E. coli, and protozoa such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium. We believe that Trojan's ultraviolet disinfection systems already are a cost-effective solution to meet the needs of Canadians for an effective disinfection barrier. With the research and development supported by the TPC program we will undertake to develop even higher levels of energy efficiency and meet the needs of Canadian municipalities for efficient, reliable and effective water disinfection."
