Watergen GEN-M Medium-Scale Atmospheric Water Generator Brings Sustainable Drinking Water Solution to Hurricane Battered Bahamas Community

Nov. 16, 2021

On June 9th, 2021 Treasure Cay, Abaco Island, The Bahamas, a Watergen GEN-M Atmospheric Water Generator was installed at the Treasure Cay Community Building and Medical Clinic providing a much-needed clean drinking water solution to this struggling community.

In 2019, before Hurricane Dorian hit the island, there were approximately 1200 residents in Treasure Cay.  Currently, there are 250-300 persons living full and part-time in the community.  The Bahamian Government provided a portable Reverse Osmosis water supply after the Hurricane, but this system was removed in December of 2020.  Prior to the GEN-M installation, potable drinking water was being trucked into the community.

A water distribution plan is in process and the focus will be to supply healthy water for children, the elderly, and medically impaired residents.  The water will be supplied in one gallon plastic camping containers from the Medical Center.

Elimination of single-use plastic water bottles is an added benefit of the Watergen installation.

“Access to safe, clean drinking water is a basic human right and Watergen’s water-from-air technology will help the Treasure Cay community rebuild and increase its water resiliency” said Dan Clifford, President, Watergen Americas.

The sale was facilitated by Watergen Bahamian Distributor, NIMBUS Solutions (Nassau).  The owner, Mr. Alex Major, was present for the installation and start up. Participating from Watergen Americas were Justin Bridges and James Graninger.

The unit was purchased by the Treasure Cay Community Foundation (TCFF) and the Canada Gives Foundation.  Mrs. Tegwen Hunt Hestedt was the Treasure Cay Community Association (TCCA) Project Manager coordinating both the project funding and installation.

Project Details:

The unit is a Watergen GEN-M/350 medium-scale Atmospheric Water Generator.  Also, included was an external water-cooling unit which will be plumbed directly into the Medical Clinic.  In preparation for the installation a 7’ x 7’ x 2’ concrete pad was pre-poured.  Post installation, a 14’ x 14’ security enclosure/roof will be installed.  A solar powered flood light and security cameras were also installed.
