From Small to Large, Precast Buildings Offer Solid Solutions

Two cases illustrate benefits of this approach

Eight 10-by-40-ft Easi-Span all-precast concrete roof panels were erected in one day.

Precast concrete buildings have proven to be functional and economical solutions for water and wastewater facilities. In particular, a market is evolving for their use for as pump houses and stations, well houses, chemical and hazardous materials storage, and water and wastewater treatment buildings. Joining several precast modules and clear-span Easi-Span roof sections creates larger environments for offices and secure space for multiple systems and specialized equipment.

Interest in this type of building has evolved as companies such as Easi-Set Buildings have brought attention to their functional value. Easi-Set buildings are fabricated using separate wall, roof and floor panels. Smaller buildings can be delivered completely assembled and outfitted. They incorporate a patented post-tensioning system in the roof and floor. A turndown roof caps the walls and a step-down floor panel eliminates the potential for water migration along the base of the wall panels. Due to the modular composition, the buildings can be installed on a concrete slab or gravel pad in a matter of hours. They also can be customized and assembled around existing equipment or delivered preassembled without a floor to fit around existing equipment.

This 12-by-17-ft control building for a wastewater treatment plant in Clinton, Mass., was precast off site and installed in two hours.

Control Building

Preassembly was a key consideration for the control building at the Massachusetts Water Resources Project’s wastewater treatment plant in Clinton, Mass.

“The site was very congested, with lots of trades working simultaneously,” said Frank Dimando, sales manager for Shea Concrete, an Easi-Set licensed building producer. “We manufactured the building on our own site and outfitted with power, lighting and insulation. One day we loaded it up, delivered to the client’s site, and two hours later we were gone—it’s truly that easy. It saved money and time and didn’t disrupt the other trades working on the cramped site.”

David Ceppetelli, project manager for general contractor R.H. White Construction, concurred. “From design to delivery, work with Shea and Easi-Set was a great experience,” he said.

Erection of this 40-by-80-by-12-ft Easi-Span building was completed in one week.

Water Treatment Plant

This 40-by-80-by-12-ft Easi-Span building with office extension was contracted through a long-time client of Easi-Set producer Smith-Midland for the Meadowbrook subdivision in Bealeton, Va. The 3,200-sq-ft custom all-precast building will provide an expanding area served by the Fauquier County Water and Sanitation Authority with the installation of multiple pumps and water filtration equipment. The use of Easi-Span precast roof panels allowed for an interior space completely clear of roof supports, maximizing square footage utilization.
