Worker Dies in Denver Water Main Break

Oct. 16, 2006

A Denver man died while fixing a water main break.

According to Rocky Mountain News, the 6-foot-deep hole where the men were working flooded with water. The water entered the hole with the force of a fire hose, trapping 35-year-old Shawn Patilla.

When rescuers finally were able to pull Patilla out of the water, he was unresponsive. The coroner determined that Patilla died from injuries to his head and neck.

Denver Water officials are investigating the incident. A six person crew was reconnecting service from a broken main to a new 8-inch line when a valve blew out, which later lead to the accident.
