NYC Water Main Break Floods Broadway
Many residents on New York City's Upper West Side are feeling waterlogged following an early morning water main break today. The main broke at the corner of 112th and Broadway, and water surged in all directions.
This 12-inch water line broke just before the start of the morning rush hour and tied up traffic along the Upper West Side all morning.
A four to five foot section of the water main now is missing and must be replaced — a strong indication that this portion of the roadway will be shut down for awhile.
As water gushed out of the ruptured main and flowed down Broadway, some pedestrians got soaked in the flow while others tried to go around the flood and rubble.
The heavy flow of water from the busted main undermined the roadway in several locations. Dirt and sand covered Broadway from 112th Street down to 110th Street. Water also poured down on to the tracks of the one and nine subway lines. Service was reduced because of an odor of gas, but firefighters checked it out and found no significant problem.
When the water was shut off, contractors went right to work trying to repair the bus line. Several businesses and residences in the area had discolored water coming from their faucets.
Repairs may not be completed until tomorrow.
