EPA Awards $229,800 to West Virginia for Drinking Water Line Extension

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $229,800 grant the Midland Public Service District, Randolph County, West Virginia to help pay for a new drinking water line to serve Haddix Road.

The new system is an extension of the existing drinking water system serving other residents of the Midland Public Service District, and will benefit about 26 additional customers.

"Providing a new drinking water system for the residents of the Haddix Road area will assure those people the availability of a safe, reliable source of drinking water, which is important in protecting public health," said Donald S. Welsh, regional administrator for EPA's mid-Atlantic region.

Residents of the Haddix Road area currently rely on private drinking water wells, which are subject to contamination from high levels of iron. The new drinking water lines will eliminate the use of private wells.

The grant will pay for 55% of the estimated $417,300 project cost, and the district will use local funds to pay the balance.
