The World Health Organization (WHO) is seeking experts to join a new Technical Advisory Group on Wastewater and Environmental Surveillance for Public Health, a multidisciplinary group that will advise the organization on the use of wastewater surveillance in public health decision-making.

The WES TAG will provide independent scientific, technical and operational advice on wastewater and environmental surveillance, including its public health value, implementation, research priorities, sampling and laboratory methods, data interpretation and legal and ethical considerations. The group will also advise on integrating wastewater surveillance into broader surveillance systems, including through a One Health approach.

WHO expects to select approximately 30 experts with experience in areas including epidemiology, environmental microbiology, sanitation and wastewater systems, sampling, laboratory methods, data management, modeling, program implementation, economics and ethics. Experience across different geographic and economic settings is also sought.

The group will normally meet at least once a year, either in person or virtually, with additional meetings possible when needed. Members will serve in an individual expert capacity rather than representing their employers or other organizations and must be free of real, potential or apparent conflicts of interest.
