Gasum to Use Industrial Wastewater to Produce Biogas

Jan. 3, 2018
The Finland-based company is nearing $32 million in funding

The Finnish company, Gasum, is moving forward with plans to potentially utilize industrial wastewater sourced from Nymölla to produce biogas on a large scale.

The agreement hopes to utilize the biogas primarily for transport sectors in Sweden. The agreement between Gasum and Nymölla would be mutually beneficial with Nymölla providing Gasum with its wastewater, leading to reduced chemical costs and lower energy consumption.

Gasum is still currently evaluating the feasibility of the process, but the company has already been granted an investment subsidy of $1.5 million by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency under the Climate Leap initiative. Beyond this, the total investment total for the project at large is nearing $32 million from several sources, and Gasum is nearing a decision with regards to investments.

The study is being carried out at the Stora Enso Nymölla Pulp and Paper plant in Sweden, and the potential yield for the project is believed to be around 90 GWh per year, rendering it the largest biogas plant in Sweden if the project moves forward.
