Evoqua to Provide Microfiltration System for Los Angeles Water Reclamation Plant

The Terminal Island Water Reclamation Plant Advanced Water Treatment Facility purifies tertiary effluent to produce purified water for indirect potable reuse applications

Evoqua Water Technologies has been awarded a contract by the city of Los Angeles’ Department of Public Works for Los Angeles Sanitation to supply its microfiltration packaged system as part of the second-phase expansion of the Terminal Island Water Reclamation Plant Advanced Water Treatment Facility in San Pedro, Los Angeles County. Ground breaking on the second-phase expansion was held April 22—the 45th anniversary of Earth Day.

The Terminal Island Water Reclamation Plant Advanced Water Treatment Facility purifies tertiary effluent to produce purified water for indirect potable reuse applications, which is especially important in the face of the ongoing California-wide drought. Terminal Island is the third Los Angeles water reclamation plant to produce reclaimed water for indirect potable reuse and one of the few plants in the country that produces water using full advanced treatment. This water will soon be used as a potable water replacement in Los Angeles Harbor-area industrial applications and as a barrier against seawater intrusion.

Evoqua will supply its Memcor CP System that uses hollow fiber membrane technology.

“We have partnered with the city of Los Angeles for decades and we are honored to have been selected to be a part of this vital expansion,” said Ron Keating, Evoqua Water Technologies CEO. “We look forward to continuing our work with the city of Los Angeles to help address water needs in the region.”

The new Terminal Island Expansion is expected to add approximately 8 million gal per day of filtrate capacity as pretreatment to the reverse osmosis and advanced oxidation process step.
