This fall, the village of Wilmette, Ill., began a multi-phase sewer system project as part of its 2013-2015 Capital Improvement Plan. Wilmette selected RJN Group Inc. engineers and field technicians to complete tasks such as:
- On-site resident engineering services
- Sanitary sewer evaluation study (SSES) services
- Flow meter analysis and modeling
- Preliminary design engineering
- GIS data conversion and viewer
- Program management
The on-site resident engineering services are currently being provided for an $800,000 manhole rehabilitation project in the Princeton Place sewer basin. This basin includes the Kenilworth Gardens area of the village where RJN field technicians have completed smoke testing, flow metering and manhole inspections as part of the SSES services. Follow-up dye testing will be done as well in order to confirm defects identified during smoke testing.
Flow meter analysis and modeling services will be provided for the Princeton Place region, the larger of the village’s two sanitary sewer basins. The project will utilize flow-monitoring data collected during a six-month period in 2013 to update and refine RJN’s 2012 hydraulic model of the basin. The analysis will provide recommendations for cost-effective options to mitigate the frequency of sanitary sewer backups, which have become a growing concern within the area.
Preliminary design engineering will be conducted for the Harms Road basin underground storage project. The project is based on RJN’s previous analysis of the basin, which recommended 5.5 million gal of detention storage and a wet-weather lift station for the Harms Road Region sanitary system. This project will significantly reduce the frequency of sewer backups and benefit approximately 1,800 properties, which represents more than a third of the village’s separated sewer area. The preliminary design will determine the dimensions and configuration of the storage basin, lift station and ancillary piping, as well as design parameters for electrical and mechanical equipment required to operate and maintain the system.
In 2012, RJN completed a GPS locating and mapping project of the village’s sanitary sewer system. The GIS data conversion portion of this project converts existing information such as basin maps, CIPP lining records, and televising records into a GIS platform. RJN is providing the village with an internally developed GIS viewer, RJN Online, which allows the village access to village GIS maps and data without the need for local GIS software or technicians.
