Purestream Services to Treat Fayetteville Shale Wastewater

July 11, 2013
Purestream Services has deployed its vapor recompression commercial water treatment system for the Fayetteville Shale gas producer in White County, Ark.

Purestream Services has been contracted to treat the wastewater at a centralized water treatment facility near Searcy, Ark. The facility was built to accommodate produced water from shale gas wells operating in the vicinity. Treating wastewater nearer to the source of the production reduces the costs of processing the produced and frac flow-back water and minimizes the environmental impacts of hauling the wastewater long distances.

"Oil and gas producers are looking for cost-effective water treatment processes that reduce the long distances required to haul water for disposal," said Purestream CEO Neil Richardson.

Purestream utilizes two technologies in the treatment process. The first is the induced-gas floatation technology that clarifies water by removing hydrocarbons and total suspended solids to below 10 ppm followed by the AVARA Vapor Recompression System that removes chlorides and total dissolved solids from the wastewater to below 300 ppm. The treated, distilled water product is cleaner than U.S. drinking water quality standards and suitable for discharge.

"This technology allows producers to integrate new water treatment options into existing operations often at or below disposal and sourcing costs," Richardson stated. "We are pleased to be introducing this process to the oil and gas industry in Arkansas."
