UC Davis Olive Center Evaluates Vibrating Membrane System

Dec. 17, 2012
Goal of testing is to reduce wastewater volumes & find way to harvest beneficial products for use in nutriceuticals

The University of California, Davis (UC Davis) Olive Center and United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) have been awarded a grant to develop innovative approaches to wastewater management and beneficial reuse. Among the technologies being evaluated is the VSEP vibrating membrane system from New Logic Research.

With over 600 million gal of wastewater generated per year, the California olive industry is looking to find new ways to save water and reduce discharge fees. Taking it one step further, the UC Davis Olive Center hopes to find ways to harvest beneficial products from the waste streams for use in nutriceuticals. The project is being spearheaded by the Olive Center's Research Director Dr. Selina Wang. Wang hopes to develop an approach that enables olive oil producers to reduce their wastewater volumes by up to 90%.

As part of its University Outreach Program, New Logic will be providing a VSEP Series LP system at no cost for the duration of the testing, as well as on-site technical support and training.

"Now more than ever, the country needs innovation, and that's exactly what you get when you combine our novel technology and the passion of talented young engineers like those at the UC Davis Olive Center,” said New Logic CEO Greg Johnson. “We know what it's like to take the seed of an idea and grow it into a thriving business—working with university researchers helps us reconnect with our roots while educating a new generation of engineers about our technology—everyone wins."
