LADWP Awards Calgon Carbon $12.4 Million Contract for UV Disinfection Systems

Systems will serve Los Angeles Aqueduct Filtration Plant and Los Angeles Reservoir

Calgon Carbon Corp. announced that it has been awarded a contract by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) to supply Sentinel Ultraviolet Disinfection Systems for the Los Angeles Aqueduct Filtration Plant (LAAFP) and the Los Angeles Reservoir (LAR). The contract is valued at $12.4 million.

LADWP, which serves 3.9 million residents, is the largest public water provider in California. It is also the second largest provider in the United States based on population served.

The 14 Sentinel Chevron UV reactors, each 48 in. in diameter, along with associated control equipment will be provided for the LAAFP. This plant will be capable of disinfecting up to 600 million gal per day (mgd) of water at peak flow rate. The 15 Sentinel Chevron 48 UV Systems provided for the LAR will be capable of treating 650 mgd. The project will provide LADWP customers with an additional barrier of protection from water borne pathogens and enable a reduction in the use of ozone and chlorine to comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Stage 2 Disinfectants and Disinfection Byproducts Rule and Long Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule.

The systems apply a carefully controlled dosage of UV light to the drinking water without the use of any chemicals. Ultraviolet disinfection of water occurs by virtue of a physical process, which alters the DNA of harmful organisms, rendering them unable to reproduce and cause harm.

This is Calgon Carbon’s second major UV contract in California. San Francisco Public Utilities Commission's Tesla Treatment Facility, which opened in July 2011, uses 12 of the Sentinel Chevron 48 systems to disinfect up to 315 mgd.

"We are pleased that the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power selected our Sentinel Chevron to meet their disinfection needs after competitive bidding and a detailed evaluation based on the total ultimate cost of ownership,” Jim Sullivan, Calgon Carbon's senior vice president – Americas, said.
