$4 Million UV Treatment System Installed at Sonoma County Plant

System will run from October through mid-May

According to pressdemocrat.com, the Russian River Sanitation District in Guerneville, Calif., recently installed a $4 million ultraviolet wastewater treatment system. The Ozonia Aquaray 40 HO system will allow the district to meet the standards for discharges into the Russian River in the winter.

Between Oct 1. And May 14, up to 3.5 million gal per day (gpd) are treated at the plant, due to runoff from storms. Comparatively, the plant treats 300,000 gpd during the summer.

The UV system will supplement and may even replace the use of chlorine, allowing the district to comply with the regulations regarding the amount of disinfectant byproducts they are allowed to discharge into the Russian River. Depending on cost, the district may run the system in the summer as well, according to Sonoma County Water Agency engineer Hody Wilson.

The new system was dedicated in March 2012 at the Neeley Road facility.
