Black & Veatch to Help Yorkshire Water Reduce Carbon

Aug. 15, 2012
Carbon reduction measures will provide more sustainable asset base

Yorkshire Water has chosen Black & Veatch to help advance its carbon reduction strategy. The project is part of a long-term sustainability commitment by the utility.

As part of the Kelda Carbon & Energy Steering Group, Yorkshire Water is tasked with delivering Sustainable New Works Design which seeks to minimize the impact of construction.

Paul Street, Black & Veatch director for sustainable solutions for the UK said, “Having a clear understanding of the embodied and operational carbon impact of different new works solutions and options allows informed decision making and helps drive more efficient and lower waste solutions. Black & Veatch will help to implement methods and tools to drive continuous improvement in this area.”

In collaboration with Yorkshire Water, its Asset Delivery Unit Partners and consultants, Black & Veatch will assist in the development of carbon data capture and optioneering processes. These will enable a more integrated approach to carbon accounting.

Black & Veatch will utilize its extensive carbon footprinting experience to provide a better understanding of the carbon impact of capital works. This augments previous work undertaken to estimate embodied carbon and will help Yorkshire Water evolve a more sustainable asset base.

The company has built up a considerable portfolio of carbon reduction projects undertaken for clients across the water and energy industries. This type of work is set to continue as the UK announces mandatory carbon reporting will be introduced from 2013 for all businesses listed on the main market of the London Stock Exchange.
