Lamar, Mo., Selects Compressible Media Filter for Wastewater System Improvements

Nov. 28, 2011

Filter was installed following a lagoon treatment process

WWETCO LLC of Canton, Ga., is commissioning their recently installed FlexFilterTM system for the current wastewater system improvements for the city of Lamar, Mo. This compressible media filter has been installed following a lagoon treatment process and is being used for the removal of algae prior to additional treatment in a subsequent nitrification process.

The media filter efficiently removes algae from lagoon effluent, which improves downstream treatment processes and enhances the UV transmissivity for more effective disinfection. This installation will be the first system to be put into service since WWETCO was acquired by WesTech Eng. Inc. of Salt Lake City.

“The simplicity and flexibility of this product will truly [change] how we look at equipment for primary treatment, tertiary filtration and CSO/SSO treatment," WWETCO General Manager John Gottschall said.

The media filter also was recently featured in a conference paper given by Jim Fitzpatrick, P.E., of Black & Veatch Corp. at this year's Water Environment Federation’s Annual Technical Exhibition and Conference (WEFTEC) in Los Angeles.

Some of the key points discussed at WEFTEC.11 included:

          • Passive control and the simplicity of system operation;
          • Physical barrier for removing particles vs. settling associated with other technologies;
          • Consistent achievement of effluent quality goals and effective pathogen reduction with conventional disinfection processes demonstrated by the pilot testing during actual wet- weather events; and
          • Potential for its flexible operation as tertiary treatment that can be switched to CSO treatment during a storm event.
