As a leader in the water industry, Xylem continues to develop and share new information to better understand the complex water challenges our world faces. These insights can help to inform public policy decisions about water issues, as well as our own R&D activities, by ensuring we focus our innovation and technology efforts in areas that can create value and meet vital customer needs.
As California continues in its fifth year of historic drought, we pursued a public opinion survey to measure public perceptions among state residents about water reuse—a proven process for sustainable water resource management. This information is particularly timely, as the state continues to develop strategies and make infrastructure investment decisions to create a more secure water future. We polled approximately 3,000 California residents to gauge their perception about recycled water and their willingness to use recycled water in their daily lives. Recycled water is defined as former wastewater that has been treated and purified so it can be reused for multiple purposes.
The survey results demonstrate that Californians are very supportive of recycled water as a long-term solution to address the state’s ongoing water challenges. Specifically, 76% of survey respondents believe recycled water should be used as a long-term solution to manage water resources, regardless of whether or not the water shortage continues.
We are pleased to share these results with you as we launch them publicly this week. We are also sharing these findings with a broad group of water leaders and policymakers, and we are equipping our sales teams with this data to share with customers as a way to discuss water reuse as a water management strategy. This survey is another example of how Xylem continues to produce original research and insightful content to help advance the important dialogue about sustainable water strategies, which ultimately will enable us to solve our customers’ water challenges.
