Water & Wastes Digest (WWD) is pleased to announce that Jake Tischler, son of WWEMA members Joe and Deb Tischler, representing Severn Trent Services, was the winner of the fifth annual WWEMA/WWD Scholarship Award.

The WWEMA/WWD award provides a $1,000 scholarship to a student accepted to a college or university to pursue a career in the environmental sciences.

This year’s recipient is attending Northeastern University and pursuing a degree in civil and environmental engineering. Tischler’s extracurricular activities include being a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and most importantly, the Northeastern University’s Engineers Without Borders.

Tischler’s current project is a small village in Honduras. The village gets all of its water supply from a small stream miles away. Due to the lack of any form of purification, the villagers are facing many problems stemming from the lack of clean water, including malnourishment.

Engineers Without Borders has been working on this project since 2005 and implemented a distribution system from a water supply about two miles away from the village. Utilizing septic tanks and purification systems, the small town now officially has clean running water. The next step is to distribute the clean water to taps for each household. Tischler hopes to be part of this process and travel around the world helping other poor areas with similar issues.

The award was presented at the WWEMA 100th Annual Meeting, which was held in Tucson, Ariz., from Nov. 13 to 15.

In the spring of 2009, WWEMA and WWD will begin accepting applications for the 2009 WWEMA/WWD Scholarship. Students with one or both parents employed by a WWEMA-member company are eligible to apply for the scholarship.

We encourage you to take advantage of this excellent opportunity and help us support future water and wastewater professionals.
