Matthew Kuzma Joins Ostara

New vice president of nutrient recovery solutions brings 20 years of experience

Ostara Nutrient Recovery Technologies Inc., a company that recovers phosphorus and nitrogen at municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants and transforms them into a eco-friendly fertilizer, announced the appointment of Matthew Kuzma as vice president of nutrient recovery solutions. Kuzma will lead Ostara’s North American sales team, implementing the company’s Pearl nutrient recovery systems. 

“As an expert in the water and wastewater industry, Matt will play an integral role in supporting our sales team and servicing our existing and potential clients,” said Phillip Abrary, Ostara co-founder and CEO. “His diverse experience in the field of water and wastewater management will support our growth strategy as we create industry-leading nutrient recovery solutions for our clients in North America and in Europe. We are very proud to welcome him back to the Ostara team.”

Kuzma brings more than 20 years of experience in the water and wastewater management industry, specializing in nutrient removal and recovery processes; anaerobic digestion; biological treatment of industrial and municipal wastewater; and membrane separation processes for water and wastewater. 

Kuzma has held management positions with industry leading companies including US Filter/Siemens Water Technologies (now Evoqua), Anaergia, Organica Water, and as managing director of nutrient recovery for Ostara from 2008 to 2013. He also is an active member of several industry organizations including the International Water Assn., Water Environment Federation, National Association of Clean Water Agencies and the California Water Environment Assn.

Kuzma holds three patents related to struvite recovery, a wastewater treatment system using membrane basins and a dynamic control system for membrane bioreactor systems, and has a Bachelor of Applied Sciences in engineering from Miami University.
