Legislation authorizes 31 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers projects

The U.S. House of Representatives approved the Water Resources Development Act of 2016 (WRDA), H.R. 5303. The legislation authorizes 31 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers projects.

Passed by a vote in the House of 399 to 25, the bill authorizes $9 billion for 31 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers projects to address flood protection, harbor dredging, environmental restoration and other projects. It also includes a provision of $170 million in direct federal money to assist Flint, Mich., and other communities with lead in their drinking water systems.

“On behalf of more than 29,000 public works professionals across the U.S., the American Public Works Assn. applauds the action of the U.S. House of Representatives in passing the Water Resources Development bill,” said APWA Executive Director Scott Grayson. “Public works professionals who plan, build, design, and maintain infrastructure understand and appreciate the importance of this legislation, which protects communities throughout the U.S. from the risk of flooding and facilitates trade through dredging our nation’s waterways.”
