American Water Works Co. Inc. announced its patented NPXpress wastewater technology has been selected as a finalist for Technology Project of the Year. One of four awards presented by industry publication American Water Intelligence (AWI) in its 2012 American Water Awards, Technology Project of the Year recognizes the implementation of a new technology in a completed water or wastewater project which most deserves broader recognition.
American Water, along with the other finalists, will give a six-minute presentation at AWI’s American Water Summit on Nov. 14 in Chicago to make the case for why they should win. The summit attendees will then vote live and the first place winners and runners-up will be announced at the awards ceremony that night.
American Water’s NPXpress technology helps wastewater utilities, which are facing both increasing operating costs and more stringent environmental regulations, to reduce costs while improving the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus. Because the technology operates at lower oxygen levels, electricity consumption for aeration is reduced by 50%. In addition, the process can eliminate the need for costly chemical addition (methanol) by up to 80 to 100%. This new process, created by American Water experts, provides a more affordable and sustainable way of treating sewage.
"We are honored to be recognized by AWI as a finalist for our patented NPXpress wastewater treatment technology," said Mark LeChevallier, director of innovation and environmental stewardship for American Water. "The innovation demonstrated by this process will help to cost effectively address pressing needs for improved technology for wastewater treatment."
