AWWA Announces Winner of George Warren Fuller Award

South Dakota-native Mitch Kannenberg is recognized for his work in groundwater resource analysis

The South Dakota Section of the American Water Works Assn. (AWWA) has named Mitch Kannenberg South Dakota’s recipient of the George Warren Fuller Award. George Warren Fuller Awards are presented annually by the AWWA to selected members of the organization’s sections around the country for distinguished service to the water supply field.

Kannenberg was presented with the George Warren Fuller award pin at the joint annual conference of the South Dakota Section of AWWA (SDAWWA), the South Dakota Water and Wastewater Assn. (SDWWA) and the South Dakota Water Environment Assn. He will be presented with the George Warren Fuller Award plaque at AWWA’s 2012 Annual Conference & Exposition to be held in Dallas, Texas, in June of next year.

Kannenberg is an associate in the Sioux Falls, S.D., office of Leggette, Brashears & Graham Inc., a professional groundwater and environmental engineering services firm. His work has included groundwater resource analysis, including exploration, well field design, and water rights permitting in fractured bedrock and in sand and gravel aquifers in South Dakota and North Dakota. 

He has also performed detailed analysis of groundwater and surface water interaction in shallow alluvial aquifers along the Missouri River in Pierre, S.D., and in a glacial aquifer along the Sheyenne River near Kindred, N.D.

In Benson County, N.D., and in Lincoln County, S.D., he oversaw exploration borehole and test well location selection and planning, oversaw the test hole drilling for new supply wells, as well as the design and specifications development for new water supply wells.

A licensed professional engineer, Kannenberg holds master's and bachelor's degrees in geological engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. He has been active in SDAWWA, serving as the association chair in 2010, as well as chairing the Technical & Education Council and serving on other SDAWWA councils in the past.

Kannenberg is currently serving on the SDWWA Board of Directors as the board liaison. He is a past president of the South Dakota Assn. of Environmental Professionals, and a member of the Geological Society of America and the National Ground Water Assn.
