Waterford Students Help Town With Storm water Management Plan

Dec. 29, 2004

The town of Waterford, which is updating its storm water discharge permit, recently asked for help from Waterford High School students. The state Department of Environmental Protection issued a new general permit last year for the state's cities and towns. This past July, Waterford completed its own storm water management plan. The town will spend the next five years complying with permit requirements that include samplings of water outlets, which the DEP tests, and yearly inspections. Waterford high school students recently labeled catch basins in town with state tags, known as stencils, to identify those basins that drain into Long Island Sound. They also made a video that the Public Works Department will use in training. The effort was meant to raise public awareness that water goes into the catch basin it doesn't just disappear.
