Israeli Sets Sail for Moldova on Water Bottles

Nov. 17, 2004

An Israeli who tried to set sail for his native Moldova on a raft strung together with water bottles has been intercepted by coastal guards.

Genadi Lambas, 38, was intercepted 28 kilometers (18 miles) from the Israeli coast, police told Wednesday's edition of the Maariv newspaper.

He was traveling with a mattress, food supplies, tools and a motorbike, which he was apparently hoping to use after reaching land, the sources said.

Photographed at sea with a motorbike helmet on his head, his raft was kept afloat by 448 mineral water bottles. The man told coast guards he was confident of his safety after praying to the Gods.
