Covington, Ga., Wins State Stormwater Award

The city of Covington, Ga. was recently honored with a statewide award for its stormwater management program.

The Georgia Water and Pollution Control Association (GW&PCA) awarded the city with its first Outstanding Stormwater Management Program of the Year Award for phase two communities, which have a population of less than 100,000.

Public Works Director Steve Horton made the announcement to the city council at a recent meeting.

The Covington Stormwater Program is mandated by the Environmental Protection Division and consists of six key elements: public education and outreach, public involvement and participation, illicit discharge detection and elimination, construction site stormwater runoff control, post-construction stormwater management in new development and redevelopment and pollution prevention for municipal operations.

"We just thought Covington did a good job of presenting their plan for their phase two program," said Laurie Hawks, chair of the GW&PCA’s Stormwater Committee. "There’s a lot of public outreach and participation. They’ve got a stormwater utility under development. They’ve reached their six elements that have to be addressed in the EPD’s phase two program."
