Water a Minor Source of Lead, WASA Expert Claims

May 7, 2004

A top D.C. Water and Sewer Authority (WASA) official claims lead in drinking water is not a major risk for children.

Doctor Tee Guidotti, WASA's new public health adviser, says it is most dangerous to kids who already have high lead levels in their blood from other sources.

The public health expert from George Washington University told the agency board on Thursday that water accounts for seven percent of the lead exposure of a typical two-year-old. He says the greatest source of exposure is dust, which comes from things like paint. His comments were reported by The Washington Post.

The latest figures released by the city show that the homes of people with elevated lead levels have excessive amounts of lead dust and crumbling paint.
