Black & Veatch recently earned a Project Merit award for its innovative implementation of membrane systems in several significant water and wastewater treatment plant designs in 2003.

The Environmental Business Journal annually recognizes outstanding performance and will present the award at the Environmental Industry Summit in March.

With a combined membrane design capacity of more than 500 million gallons per day (mgd) and experience that ranges from research and evaluation to design and design-build delivery, Black & Veatch has helped utility, government and industry clients worldwide creatively combine and adapt all types of membrane systems to local needs and requirements.

The Environmental Business Journal specifically recognized Black & Veatch for its membrane achievements in 2003, including the company’s design of the largest ultrafiltration (UF) facility for potable water treatment in North America — the 70-mgd Columbia Heights Membrane Filtration Plant for the Minneapolis Water Works in Minnesota; design-build of the largest (20 mgd) U.S. water treatment plant integrating microfiltration (MF) membrane technology with advanced pretreatment processes for California Water Service Company, in Bakersfield, Calif.; design of a 30-mgd immersed UF system that also incorporates pretreatment coagulation and post-membrane granular activated carbon based on pilot study results in Scottsdale, Ariz; design and construction support for a reverse osmosis water softening plant that’s the largest of its kind in the state, in O’Fallon, Mo.; and design of the largest membrane water treatment facilities in the world—72-mgd and 96-mgd immersed MF/UF plants at the Chestnut Avenue and the Choa Chu Kang Water Works for the Public Utilities Board of Singapore.

"We’re delighted to receive this prestigious award in recognition of our successful application and advancement of membrane processes," said Dan McCarthy, president of the Water Americas division of Black & Veatch. "This is one example of how our water and wastewater treatment process specialists around the world have pooled expertise to provide innovative and economical, technology-based solutions that help communities reuse and desalinate water resources, produce safe drinking water and protect the environment."
