Burst Water Lines Flood, Freeze Jersey City Streets

Jan. 14, 2004

Cold weather in Jersey City, N.J., caused water lines to burst this morning, flooding and freezing intersections and snarling morning traffic, police said.

Some areas of the city experienced low water pressure, but residents were not advised to boil water, Sgt. Edgar Martinez, a police spokesman, told the Associated Press.

Pressure was back to normal by noon, when three of the five ruptures had been repaired by United Water Co., and water was diverted away from the other two, Martinez said.

The pipes began bursting about 4 a.m. as temperatures plummeted below 20 degrees after a brief mild spell.
