Earlier this month, the editorial staff of Water & Wastes Digest (WWD), Storm Water Solutions and Water Quality Products had the pleasure of touring the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago’s (MWRDGC) Mainstream Pumping Station in Hodgkins, Ill. The station is a key component of the district’s Tunnel and Reservoir Project, better known as the Deep Tunnel system, which alleviates flooding and protects Lake Michigan from backflows and sewer overflow pollution.
Chief Operating Engineer Hank Marks and other MWRDGC staffers led hard hat-clad editors Neda Simeonova, Elizabeth Lisican, Kate Cline and me through the dewatering station, trash removal building, pump room (350 ft below ground!), McCook Reservoir construction site and more.
