The Gravel Ridge Sewer Improvement District 213 is the perfect example of a small utility upgrading from a wastewater lagoon treatment system while still finding use for those existing ponds. The state of Arkansas, in which Gravel Ridge is located, has imposed stricter nutrient limits for wastewater utilities.

For those with lagoon treatment, this is posing a headache as they have to pivot to activated sludge or other systems to meet new requirements while losing a precious asset. Gravel Ridge shows how to repurpose those treatment ponds while also upgrading the plant to meet those requirements.
