Single-Leaf Smoke Vents Receive UL Approval

Nov. 19, 2013
Type SV products now tested and certified to meet UL 793 requirements

Bilco’s Type SV, single leaf, automatic smoke vents, available with a metal cover or a domed polycarbonate cover for natural day lighting, have received UL approval per the UL 793 standard for automatically operated roof vents for smoke and heat.

UL is a global independent safety science company that is dedicated to promoting safe living and working environments by safeguarding people, products and places. The UL 793 fire protection standard for automatic smoke vents designates several different tests to ensure safety for these products. To receive certification, vents are tested to ensure that they fully open against a simulated 10 PSF snow and wind load, remain open and latched under these conditions, and remain closed when subjected to wind uplift pressures. While Bilco’s single leaf smoke vents have always been designed to these performance standards, the products have now been officially tested to carry the UL label.

As with all Bilco smoke vent products, the Type SV single leaf is designed to open automatically in the event of a fire to remove smoke, heat and toxic gases from a burning building. This improves inside air quality and visibility inside the building to allow occupants to escape safely and firefighters to get in to do their job. Smoke vents are ideally suited for buildings with large expanses of unobstructed space such as factories, warehouses, auditoriums and retail facilities.
