New Jersey Section AWWA Meets Legislators to Discuss Waters Issues

May 11, 2006

Representatives of the New Jersey Section of the American Water Works Association (NJAWWA) visited the Statehouse to promote the importance of safe drinking water in New Jersey. During the visit, the group was presented with a proclamation signed by Governor Jon Corzine and presented by Senate President Richard J. Codey, officially acknowledging May 7 to 13 as “Drinking Water Week,” and calling upon all New Jersey residents to practice wise water use and protect source waters from pollution.

NJAWWA members, including representatives from American Water, and one of its subsidiaries, New Jersey American Water; Aqua New Jersey; Middlesex Water Company; and Trenton Water Works took the opportunity to speak with legislators about NJAWWA’s role as the premiere organization in the state dedicated to preserving public health and welfare by insuring the highest quality drinking water. NJAWWA Section Chair Chris Andreasen, director of engineering, Middlesex Water Co., led the event and spoke on the importance of public and private sector water suppliers working with legislators and regulators to secure a safe and adequate water supply, which is critical to the public health and the economic welfare of New Jersey’s citizens.

The NJAWWA Section commemorates Drinking Water Week with a variety of activities including a statewide student poster contest, networking events and a fundraising event for Water for People. Water for People helps impoverished people worldwide improve their quality of life by supporting locally sustainable drinking water and sanitation and hygiene education programs. The section will also be joining the Hackensack Riverkeepers for a watershed cleanup event on the Hackensack River on May 13.
