Missouri City Holds Contest for Unique Manhole Covers

The Public Works Storm Water Services Division of Springfield, Mo., and the Springfield Regional Arts Council have joined together to sponsor a storm water manhole cover design competition.

The contest was created to bring together the need to meet federal clean water regulations, and create public art.

To enter the contest, one must submit a black-and-white design in a six-inch circle representing the center of a manhole.

According to the Springfield News-Leader, the main requirement is that the winning design must indicate that the manhole is part of the city storm water sewer system.

The contest intends to help educate people that storm water needs to be protected from pollution.

Storm water division employees will judge the contest. The department might have to modify the design so it can be reproduced on cast iron covers.
