The house has approved a proposal that would require the study of wastewater treatment plants that discharge into Great Lakes.
According to the Lansing State Journal, the measure was introduced by Rep. Bart Stupak, (D-Mich.), and was included in a larger bill on paying for wastewater and sewage treatment programs to encourage cooperation between the United States and Canada on monitoring water quality.
The proposal requires the Environmental Protection Agency to study was wastewater treatment facilities that discharge into the Great Lakes as well as offer ideas to improve cooperation between Canada and the United States. The proposal was passed on a voice vote.
The Lansing State Journal reports that the EPA would be required to consult with the State Department, the Canadian government and the International Joint Commission, the organization given the task of protecting the boundary waters between Canada and the U.S.
