Firm helps relieve chronic flooding, improve poor traffic conditions

Dewberry has been recognized for its work on the Springfield Gardens Area D project with a Silver Award in the waste and storm water category from the American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACEC NY).

The Springfield Gardens Area Reconstruction was planned to solve chronic flooding and poor roadway and infrastructure conditions in the Springfield Gardens section of Queens, N.Y. The project included reconstruction of 2.5 miles of roadway, sanitary, and storm sewer improvements with floodplain, wetland, and storm water best management practice (BMP) drainage improvements in Springfield and Idlewild Parks. Using sustainable infrastructure principles, storm water is collected and discharged into the wetlands where the water is naturally filtered. The area was refurbished with vegetative diversity and wildlife, creating park programs that connect area residents with nature and an urban ecosystem.

Approximately 3.5 acres of new wetlands were created, and 2.8 miles of new sewer line and 84 new catch basins were constructed. This was the fourth phase of a $175-million neighborhood infrastructure improvement project.

More than 60 firms submitted projects to be judged in the ACEC NY Engineering Excellence Awards. These projects were reviewed by a panel of industry experts on complexity, innovation and value to society. Winners of the award will be honored at the 50th Annual Engineering Excellence Awards Gala in New York City April 1, 2017.
