March 20, 2015
American Water also became an Alliance Associate

American Water announced that its President and CEO Susan Story has been elected to serve on the board of directors for the Alliance to Save Energy, a nonprofit that promotes energy efficiency to achieve a healthier economy, a cleaner environment and greater energy security. Story previously served on the Alliance board while president of Southern Company Services, a subsidiary of Southern Co.

American Water is also a new Alliance Associate, which represents nearly 140 companies and organizations committed to advancing energy efficiency.

“I’m very excited to return to the Alliance and continue working with fellow Board members to identify and move forward policies and initiatives that can address the challenges around water and energy use in this country,” said Story. “The energy–water nexus is a critical area of focus for American Water’s environmental and operational efforts. Energy use affects how we provide vital services to our customers and it also impacts how much those services cost. Our energy and water efficiency measures are key to meeting our commitment to sustainability as well as to our operational efficiency goals.”

American Water is committed to protecting the environment. From investing in smart water management to pioneering a smart water grid, American Water is addressing the water-energy nexus challenge from source to tap and beyond. The company continually drives energy and water efficiency through consumer and community education programs, innovative leak detection efforts, replacement and rehabilitation of aging infrastructure including pipelines and pumps, managing energy contracts and through the installation of renewable power at several of our water treatment facilities.

“It is our job in the water industry to remember what we do changes lives. It provides for health. It enables energy production and electricity generation. And we must provide clean, safe, affordable and reliable water to our customers today, tomorrow, and into the future. Finding ways to use water and energy more efficiently is an opportunity to do just that,” Story said.

Story joined American Water in 2013 as CFO before being named to her current role as president and CEO on May 9, 2014. Before joining American Water, Story spent 31 years in the electric and energy utility industry, serving as executive vice president of Southern Co. In that role she was also president and CEO of Southern Company Services, and prior to that she was president and CEO of Gulf Power Co., a Southern operating subsidiary in Florida.

Story has a history of active involvement in community, industry, education and economic development efforts. She currently serves on the board of directors for the Bipartisan Policy Center and is a member of the Moffitt Cancer Center Board of Advisors in Tampa, Fla. Story is also an independent director of Raymond James Financial, a diversified financial services company.
