HDR’s Layman Elected President of the Society of Women Engineers
Colleen Layman has been elected to serve as the president of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). Her term includes two years: one as president-elect, which began July 1, 2014 through June 2015, and the following year as president.
Layman’s involvement with SWE, which has more than 25,000 members, spans over 15 years. She’s held several leadership positions at the society, region and local levels, and has been an active member of several society committees. She also represented SWE as a member of the steering committee for the development of the U.S. technological literacy framework and specifications commissioned by the Department of Education National Assessment Governing Board in 2008 and 2009.
“The Society of Women Engineers is sure to benefit from Colleen’s unique insights and perspective,” said Karen Horting, executive director and CEO of SWE. “We’re pleased to have such a strong visionary and vibrant personality leading our organization during this growth period.”
“I’m really focused on working with SWE to solidify a strong global structure that’ll support the pilot sections and activities we’ve developed worldwide,” Layman said. “We’ve got some great relationships with large corporations that can help us to get there. We have an opportunity to make an even bigger impact by reaching out to small and mid-size businesses everywhere to provide networking and professional development.”
At HDR, Layman is the energy-water management practice leader and resources water principal. She has more than 20 years of experience in the engineering design, construction, commissioning and operation of power generating facilities.
Layman holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering technology from Thomas Edison State College, a master’s in water resources and environmental engineering from Villanova University, and an MBA in management of engineering and technology from North Central University, and is a registered professional engineer.
