Nov. 28, 2011

Employees presented on various topics at International Water Assn. Congress in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

CH2M HILL, a global full-service consulting, design, construction and operations firm, announces that two of the firm’s employees presented at the International Water Assn.’s (IWA) 2nd Development Congress and Exhibition. Hui Chng Chan and Tania Datta presented during the young professional workshop, “Tomorrow’s Urban Water and Sanitation Challenges: The Role of Tomorrow’s Leaders in Addressing Them.”

The congress, which was held Nov. 21 to 24 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, aimed to foster the conversations and relationships needed to develop innovative solutions at the frontier of water and sanitation management and urban development.

Datta is a wastewater process engineer based in CH2M HILL’s Salt Lake City office. Datta has experience in wastewater process modeling and design and detailed cost estimates and research experience in biological wastewater treatment technologies, identification of molecular ecology, and bioremediation of contaminated soil and sediments.

Among her areas of expertise are biological nutrient removal, water sampling techniques, and use of advanced molecular tools to identify and analyze microbial ecology in aquatic systems.

Datta presented a paper co-authored by Katja Neubauer and John Sauer of Water For People titled “The Future Global Water and Sanitation Challenges: From a Socio-Economic Perspective." The presentation used India as a case study to discuss how water and sanitation challenges are significantly influenced by economical, social and cultural norms, such as poverty, gender disparity and effective capacity building to maintain infrastructure.

Chng Chan is a project manager based in CH2M HILL’s Singapore office. Her more than 10 years of experience covers master planning, design, construction and supervision works for a variety of projects, spanning wastewater treatment, water reuse, seawater desalination, gravity wastewater collection networks and storm water systems. Chan presented a paper titled “Innovative Solutions: Coping With Uncertainty in a Time of Change: Innovative Solutions to Address Future Urban Water and Sanitation Challenges."

The presentation used the Singapore PUB Active Beautiful Clean Waters Program as an example of how to manage urban storm water in an increasingly complex environment. PUB has developed a comprehensive network of waterways that not only serves as the storm water conveyance network, but also an urban reservoir augmenting the city’s scarce water resources.

CH2M HILL has been assisting PUB in designing and implementing the program, which is transforming the waterways and reservoirs into vibrant, clean and aesthetically pleasing lifestyle attractions where recreation and communal bonding activities can take place.
