LANXESS Sybron Corp. Discontinues Production at Birmingham, N.J. Facility

Specialty chemicals company LANXESS Corp. has announced that its wholly owned subsidiary LANXESS Sybron Chemicals, Inc., will discontinue production of ion exchange resins and related products at its facility in Birmingham, N.J., effective May 2, 2008. This will affect approximately 90 jobs.

“This was not an easy decision, but it was economically necessary,” LANXESS Sybron President Markus Linke said. “The Birmingham production site is unable to compete in the changing ion exchange industry. We are grateful for the service our employees in Birmingham have provided, and we will help the affected employees through this period of transition.”

With LANXESS’ existing ion exchange production sites in Leverkusen and Bitterfeld, Germany, and its planned facility in Gujarat, India, the company is confident that it can continue to meet its customers’ ion exchange needs.

“We are committed to the ion exchange industry and are taking the necessary steps to help strengthen our business for the future,” said Dr. Michael Zobel, managing director of LANXESS’ Ion Exchange Resins business unit.

The LANXESS Sybron facility in Birmingham, N.J. will continue to serve NAFTA customers as a sales, technical service, laboratory and warehousing facility for the LEWATIT and IONAC ion exchange resins.
