The Honorable George Bush, 41st President of the United States, addressed housewares executives during the 2001 International Housewares Show, the National Housewares Manufacturers Association, sponsors of the Show. The President drew on lessons from his lifetime of dedicated public service and brought his unique historical vantage point to the housewares industry during the annual Industry breakfast/NHMA Annual Meeting on Monday, Jan. 15.

The 2001 International Housewares Show was held Jan. 14-17 at McCormick Place in Chicago. There were approximately 60,000 attendees from around the globe including more than 1,800 exhibitors.

During President Bush's term in office, the Cold War ended; the Soviet Union ceased to exist; the Berlin Wall fell and Germany was reunified; and Eastern Europe and the Baltic States became free. Bush assembled a coalition of 32 nations and successfully liberated Kuwait. Bush counts among his accomplishments the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Clean Air Act, landmark civil rights legislation and environmental legislation. He also fought for and negotiated the North American Free Trade Agreement, which was later signed into law.

Since leaving office, Bush has written two books, visited 56 foreign countries and helped raise millions of dollars for a variety of charitable organizations. Bush serves on the Board of Advisors of M.D.Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, and is the honorary chairman of the Points of Light Foundation.
