Jerry Stevens accepts gavel at conclusion of ACE11 in Washington, D.C.

Pledging to work to assure “the highest water quality is preserved for future generations,” West Des Moines, Iowa, Water Works General Manager Jerry Stevens took the reins as president of the American Water Works Association (AWWA) at the conclusion of the 2011 Annual Conference and Exposition in Washington, D.C.

Stevens is a registered professional engineer and certified water treatment plant operator and distribution system operator. He has been a member of AWWA for more than 36 years. He follows Joseph Mantua, Black and Veatch customer services manager, in leading the 130-year-old organization.

In accepting the gavel, Stevens said his priorities would be to optimize value for members, pursue beneficial alliances and partnerships, and grow leadership and development opportunities for young professionals.

“It was once said that the test of an organization is not genius, it is the capacity to help extraordinary people achieve extraordinary things,” he said. “I look forward to working with each of you to achieve extraordinary things this year for AWWA.”

ACE11 featured more than 100 professional sessions and an exposition with 500 companies and more than 1,000 exhibit booths. Next year’s AWWA conference in Dallas is June 10-14, 2012.
